January 10, 2003 Positions & Fellowships: ---------- INTERNSHIPS AT THE NATIONAL YIDDISH BOOK CENTER Summer 2003 Since 1980, the National Yiddish Book Center has rescued more than one million unwanted and discarded Yiddish books, and has distributed thousands of volumes to students, scholars, and libraries around the world. The Center also produces a wide range of innovative cultural and educational programs that integrate knowledge of Yiddish literature and culture into the mainstream of American Jewish life. Our Visitors Centerin Amherst features museum exhibitions, a public garden, an English-language bookstore, and more. This year, the Center will host its annual paid internship program for college students from June 2 until July 25. Interns will help us collect books, unload trucks, sort and shelve donated volumes, and perform other tasks necessary to maintain our collection and make our rescued books available to interested readers. Interns will also take daily classes in Yiddish language and literature, and will participate in the Centers annual week-long educational conference on Jewish culture, whose special theme this year is Jewish film. We are looking for applicants who combine a sincere interest in Jewish life and learning with enthusiasm for hard work. We seek applicants who will derive pride and satisfaction from furthering a unique cause. Prospective interns must be willing to perform significant physical labor (boxes of books can be heavy), though interest and willingness are more important than strength. Interns must be willing to do Yiddish-class homework on their own time. No prior knowledge of Yiddish is necessary to participate in this program. More information and a downloadable application form are available at the Centers web-site: www.yiddishbooks.org. Application information is also available by contacting Catherine Madsen at [email protected]. The deadline for submitting applications is March 14, 2003.
