Radio Station Bans James Blunt by Daniel Zugna May 29 2006 A British radio station has listened to the people and issued a blanket ban on James Blunt from its airwaves. Essex FM claims it was besieged by complaints from angry listeners, who had evidently had enough of Mr Blunt’s omnipresent over-earnestness. It seems that people are finally paying heed to Blunt’s own suggestion, “To all those bastards who don’t like my music – you’re all adults, you can switch your radio off.” Perhaps in an attempt to counter claims that the banning is no more than a typical radio station publicity stunt, Essex FM program controller Chris Cotton explained, “We don’t have anything against James Blunt and we’re pleased he has been so successful, but we really need a break. “While his songs have been very popular, there is a tremendous amount of industry pressure to play certain artists frequently. “Often this can be out of step with the audience’s tastes, which results in songs being overplayed. We’re happy to stand up to this pressure and follow the strong message listeners have given us. We encourage other radio stations to take the same step.” No one is more aware of Blunt’s massive over-exposure than the man himself. Accepting the Ivor Novello Award, Blunt said, “thank you very much for the Most Overplayed Song award.” Meanwhile, fellow UK sop-rockers Keane look set to be the greatest beneficiaries of the Blunt ban.
