הארכיבישוף של ווילס הופך לדרואיד...

מה דעתכם?????? הידיעה הבאה פורסמה בעיתונות הבריטית: ד"ר רוהאן וויליאמס, הארכיבישוף של ווילס, שעומד להחליף את ד"ר ג´ורג´ קאריי (הארכיבישוף של קנטרברי), יקבל היום תואר כבוד של "דרואיד לבן" בגרוסד הפייטנים הוולשי. הגרוסד הוא כינוס של משוררים, סופרים, אומנים ונגנים הדוברים את השפה הוולשית, וכן אנשים אחרים שתרמו רבות לתרבות והשפה הוולשית. (מקורותיו של הגרוסד בתרבות המשוררים הדרואידים הקלטית.) הארכיבישוף הבא של קנטרברי אמר כי הוא נפגע עמוקות מכך שתיארו אותו כפגאן. "האימרות שהופיעו לאחרונה בכמה מעיתוני היום הבריטיים על כך שהגרוסד קשור ולו במעט לפגאניות פוגעות בנו עמוקות" אמר ד"ר וויליאמס. "אלו לא רק הרמיזות על כך שאני רוצה להתקשר עם פגאניזם הפוגעות בנו, אלא גם פגיעה בכל הוולשים המעריכים את הגרוסד והאיסטדפוד(פסטיבל וולשי לאומי) על הצבע והתרבות שהם מביאים לחיים הלאומיים בוויילס." (מתוך ה"דיילי אקספרס" של אתמול) מה דעתכם???? הארכיבישוף של ווילס, שהוא גם הארכיבישוף הבא של קנטרברי, נפגע עמוקות מכך שרמזו שהוא הולך לזכות בתואר דרואיד (שהוא תואר פגאני) בטקס וולשי לאומי שמקורותיו בימים הפגאנים. מכאן רק נותר לנחש מה דעתה של הכנסייה של ימינו על פגאניות (ואני מדבר על הכנסייה האנגליקנית שנחשבת לליברלית!!). שאלה אחרת העוברת לי בראש היא היכן עובר הקו המפריד בין פגאניות לנצרות על פי אותו ארכיבישוף, או אפילו על פי מארגני הגרוסד? כנראה שבווילס הכנסת "הדרך הישנה" אל תוך הנצרות, וההיפך, היא דבר שעדיין מתרחש, ואין בו מן הסתירה. שאלתי כמה מכרים וולשים ואנגלים ואני מחכה לתשובה מהם... בברכת אור, Dia Leoghann

תשובתו של פיליפ קאר-גום

פיליפ קאר גום הוא ראש מסדר ה-OBOD (Order of bards Ovates and Druids) לא היה לי כח לתרגם אז תסלחו לי.... While the Druid Revival began in the seventeenth century, with interest in the megalithic monuments of Britain and the rediscovered classical texts, it gained momentum in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and resulted in the development of three separate, though related manifestations of Druidism. In Wales, Bardic festivals of music and poetry, called Eisteddfodau, can be traced back to at least 1176, though they are undoubtedly of ancient provenance. Historical records are scant, however, and the first modern Eisteddfod occurred in 1789. A few years later, in 1792, Iolo Morganwg introduced his Druid ritual into the Eisteddfod proceedings. Now known as the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, this flourishing institution is dedicated to helping promote Welsh cultural identity and language, and the Druid ceremonies within it are enacted by Christians, most of whom would probably be horrified to think their activities might in any way be seen as "esoteric" or "pagan". Their spirituality is grounded in the Church, mostly Methodist, and their Druidic activities are seen as cultural rather than "spiritual". The Eisteddfod, complete with its Druid ceremonial, was adopted later in Brittany in 1899 and in Cornwall in 1928. The Archbishop´s reaction to being connected with paganism bears this out I believe!

כמובן שהיו מאז קצת התפתחויות...

ואחת מהן היא מאבק בין הדרואידים הוולשים של האיסטדפוד, והדרואידים הבריטים\אנגלים. זהו מכתב שנשלח ל-BBC ע"י פיליפ שלקראס ראש מסדר ה-BDO (British Druid Order) שוב לא היה לי כוח לתרגם.... Dear PM, Browsing the BBC website today I came across a comment on English Druids from the Archdruid of the Welsh Gorsedd, Dr Robyn Lewis, who today ordained Rowan Williams, the new archbishop of Canterbury, as a Druid. Dr Lewis said: "We are not like the English druids. The Stonehenge druids are a pot-smoking crowd. Ours is a very respectable society. The ceremony is not pagan. It is quite innocent. It is a society for the furtherance of the arts in Wales, nothing more." As a pagan English Druid who lives near Stonehenge and visits it quite frequently, though not at the summer solstice when it´s far too noisy, I feel I may have grounds for a libel case here. I do not smoke pot. I am, I believe, moderately respectable, as is the largely pagan Druid community to which I belong, as do many teachers, nurses, doctors, academics, artists, writers and others. Perhaps the Archdruid should recall that the group of which he is a member was founded in the 18th century by Iolo Morganwg, a notorious forger, sometime jailbird, revolutionary, failed businessman AND a life-long laudanum addict. Incidentally, one of the things that inspired Iolo to invent the Gorsedd was a visit to Stonehenge. I have been unable to ascertain how stoned he may have been at the time.
