Yes, we would very much appreciate having photos of the Vietnam War era. In this subject please contact Peter Vercruijsse , our Chief Database Editor. Regarding the guidelines- I tried to summarize the most important points, and here they are: In the past, when we just started and wanted to be a significant site, we used to accept almost every picture sent to us. Nowadays , we only accept the best and a very high percentage of the photos that are uploaded are rejected. We recommend the use of a good camera and scanner. Spend time finding the best DPI and other scanner settings to get the final image to look as good as possible. Also use a photo manipulating tool and use the “sharpen” feature when needed. The photos need to be bigger than about 1024X768 pixels. We suggest using sizes around 1000 pixels in width. Anything bigger than 1600X1600 will automatically be resized. We reject photos of low esthetic qualities (bad angle , window reflections, pictured just a part of an aircraft’ out of focus or similar) and photos picturing an aircraft far in the distance, spend time finding the right light and angle. Never shoot from behind a window, the shadow side of an aircraft , always hold the camera in 90 degree angle to the ground. Since we added the “Tail and Winglets” and the “Nose close ups” sections’ we have accepted a large amount of such photos. Please refrain from sending in such photos just to get them added into those categories/ we will reject unmotivated close-ups. The best views are always clear shot of the entire aircraft even though we don’t have e special section for such. Our scripts can only handle the jpeg format 9.jpg) and we do not have the time to process manually. If your photos are not in jpeg format, use any photo manipulating tool and make them so. If your camera date/time stamps the photo, please remove this feature or use another camera. Photos with such dates added are usually rejected. We do not hold the same high standards for old photos, accident related, unusual aircraft/airline or other special motives. Don’t forget to mention why your photo is so special. It is in our interest ( and yours as well) to keep our database quality high. Look for bad scan quality like blurry, dark, small size etc. A very important fact that many of you do not know or forget is to check the color depth and resolution of your monitor. If you do not use true color (32bit) and at least 1024X768 pixels resolution you won’t see the photo as it is meant to be seen. This is of critical importance. if you cannot see the difference you will probably not use the best settings on your scanner or your software and your photos will not be looking their best. I try to be as fair as possible , and so are all my screeners around the world. We do not reject photos by their originating country or the photographer nationality. If a photo was rejected- there was probably a good reason for it. Read the confirmation message and make the necessary changes. Rejecting one’s photo does not mean one is a bad photographer. Almost all of the best professional photographers have got one or more of their photos rejected at some time. Every photo is related on the same scale. We do not favor anyone. I want to emphasize that we do not accept photos that have been altered in any way. I hope this has been helpful , and I remain at your service Gary (Granite)
