ציטוט מהספר מתנת האבהות/ד"ר ארון האס בהקדמה לספר אומר המחבר כי למרות כל התיאוריות ההתפתחותיות שלמד, וההכשרה הנרחבת כפסיכולוג קליני, למרות כל המטופלים שפגש במהלך השנים – לא היה מוכן למשמעותה האמיתית של האבהות עד שלא היו לו ילדים משלו. בחרתי להביא מן הספר את הדף הראשון בו נפתח הספר עוד לפני "פתח דבר" וה"הקדמה": אתמול ילדי בא לעולם, באותה דרך כמו כולם. אך לי היו פגישות ותשלומים וערעורים, והוא למד ללכת בעוד אני בסידורים. ולפני ששמתי לב הוא כבר ידע לדבר, וכשגדל והתפתח קצת הוא היה אומר: אני אהיה כמוך, אבא, עוד תראה אותי, ממש בדיוק, אתה יודע, קופי משפחתי. סבתא סורגת, סבתא בשלה דייסה, התינוק גדל, כבר לא בעריסה. מתי תבוא הביתה, אבא? לא יודע, בן, אבל כשאחזור אז מתנה לך אתן וגם, אני מבטיח, יחד נתפנן. אתמול מלאו לו עשר, בחור גדול ממש, תודה על הכדור, אבא, בוא קצת למגרש; תלמד אותי לקלוע ג'מפשוטים לסל. היום אני עסוק, אמרתי וחסל! תשכח מזה, אמר, וכשהפנה לי גב הספקתי עוד לראות אצלו כזה חיוך רחב, שאמר: אהיה כמוהו, עוד תראו אותי, ממש בדיוק, אתם יודעים, קופי משפחתי. סבתא סורגת, סבתא בשלה דייסה, התינוק גדל, כבר לא בעריסה. מתי תבוא הביתה, אבא? לא יודע, בן, אבל כשאחזור אז מתנה לך אתן וגם, אני מבטיח, יחד נתפנן. אתמול הוא בא לחופש מהמכללה כל-כך יפה, כל-כך בוגר, ממש שמחה גדולה, בני, אני גאה בך, בוא שב קצת, נדבר... מצטער, ענה לי, אבל אני ממהר; זרוק לי את מפתחות המכונית, בבקשה, אני יורד דרומה למשך החופשה. אני מזמן בפנסיה ובני מזמן עזב ורק אתמול הרמתי טלפון אליו. בוא ניפגש, אמרתי, אולי תמצא קצת זמן... אין בעיות, ענה לי, רק תן לבדוק ביומן; מצטער, נזכרתי שיש לי ועידה ובכלל, אני טובע בים של עבודה. טוב שצלצלת, אבא, והרבה תודה. הנחתי את השפופרת ואז עלה בדעתי, שהוא נעשה כמוני, שחיקה אותי, ממש בדיוק, אתם יודעים, קופי משפחתי. ואת זה העברתי אליכם כשאני כאן, במשרדי, יושב ומטפל בענייני הישוב... מושי.
