"The Used might have been off the rock radar for awhile, but they've revealed to Kerrang! that they're not nervous about returning with new material, despite the super success of bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. The Utah screamo quartet have been working on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's 'In Love And Death' for the last five months in Los Angeles with producer John Feldmann, who worked with them on their previous two offerings. But guitarist Quinn Allman says he and his bandmates feel so confidently about the new songs that they have no concerns about any fans who may have pledged their allegiance to other bands in the scene in the two years that they've been away. 'Fuck them if they have,' Allman says. 'You can either come with us or you can't, and we don't care. We're all pretty happy and stable with the hand we've been dealt.''Bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At The Disco, all this vaudeville, lightning in a bottle, comic book hero thing, is a little sleazy,' he adds. 'It's over-stuffing the turkey. A lot of bands are trying really hard right now. We're making honest music, just like we always have. We let the music do the talking.' So what does the new album sound like? 'It's pretty out there,' Allman reveals. 'It's a lot heavier and it's a really passionate album that's fun to listen to. Every song has an element to it that's not taking itself too seriously.' 'Everyone's been smiling a lot more,' he says. 'The foundation is stronger than it's ever been.' Allman also admits that the band's new-found lease of life has a lot to do with the departure of original drummer Branden Steineckert, who left in September, and has since been replaced by sticksman Dan Whitesides. 'We departed with Branden and went seperate ways, and that was something that opened it up for us,' he explains. 'It was just a sharing of the minds issue. It was difficult, but it was really just artistic differences. It definitely needed to happen for the best interests of everyone.' The Used's new album is expected for release early next year."
