Womans Day has a full page article about the opening night of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Auckland on Saturday night. This is the production which Kevin was due to pay the lead, but to whom the performance is now dedicated to after his untimely death earlier this year. There is a fantastic picture of Joel Tobeck dressed in drag as Frank-n-furter, as well as a small picture of Kevin with wife and son, and other actors from the production. The article reads: KEVIN´S ACTING FRIENDS PAY A SPECIAL TRIBUTE The opening night of Auckland Theatre Company´s flamboyant production of The Rocky Horror Picture show was a bittersweet moment for the cast and crew, who dedicated the star-studded premiere to Kiwi acting legend Kevin Smith. Kevin who tragically died in February after falling from a film set in China, was to have played the outrageous lead character Frank-n-Furter. Instead, his memory was honoured with all proceeds from the night going to a trust in his name to help his wife, Suzanne and sons, Oscar, 11, Tyrone, 9 and Willard, 5, who are facing their first Christmas without their dad. "Rehearsals have been tinged with sadness given that Kevin Smith was to play Frank-n-Furter," says show director Simon Prast. "We mean to honour him with a production he would have relished". The gala performance has come as a great comfort to the actor´s family and close friends. "Kevin´s not there but everybody is doing it for him", says showbiz agent Robert Bruce. "In Kevin´s case he is gone but he is certainly not forgotten". While it has been a tough time for Suzanne and the boys, they are doing their best to rebuild their lives. Making his stage debut in the musical is broadcasting bad boy, Mikey Havoc, who plays Eddie and Dr Scott, parts made famous by the fat boy of rock, Meat Loaf. Also appearing in the high-energy show is Shortland Street star Roy Snow, Sophia Hawthorne, Ainslie Allen and Joel Tobeck. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a rock´n´roll musical written by Hamilton man Richard O´Brien, and featuring the classic "Timewarp" tune, celebrates its 30th anniversary next year. New Zealand will be one of the first countries in the world to perform the show in its birthday year.
