Shalom Banot! This past Friday was the Maccabiah triathlon! Four years ago I had the privilege of representing Israel – marching with the Israeli delegation into the stadium, hearing the roaring applause and cheers of those in the stands, meeting Jewish athletes from around the world, all coming together, in Israel, to share, to meet, to compete. It was an honor!! It was one of the highlights of my experience of living in Israel, a highlight of my being a triathlete, another of those moments when I burst with pride at who I am, what I have chosen to become. I never anticipated that when Tamar and I crossed the finish line of the first Women’s Triathlon, in 1994, that one day I would earn the right to represent my country in such an important event! This past Friday, I had the privilege of attending and cheering on my many friends – men and women, who participated. The additional GRAND part of the Maccabiah is the meeting of Israeli and international athletes. What a pleasure to see the delegations from England, Canada, the USA, S. Africa, Mexico and Australia swimming, biking and running – sweating, concentrating, celebrating, waving their flags – together with us. We share the love of sport. We share the love of, identification with our Judaism. We share the energy, the challenge and achievement. We live in the here and now, busy with today’s daily schedule, how to juggle work, family, sport, relaxation and leisure into each day. We sometimes can barely think a week or month ahead… But I offer you this: The NEXT Maccabiah is four years away. You’ve got four years to dream, to train, to work, to expand your sports horizons, to develop, to embrace this world of sport! Go for it! With love, Yours in tri and sport, Susie
