Jane Mag. 2005 In Our Own Office! Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp put on a mini-concert in our conference room. If 21-year-old Michelle Branch and her husband Teddy (who happens to play bass in her band) ever starred in their own version of Newlyweds, pal Jessica Harp, 23, would be the CaCee Cobb to Michelle's Jessica Simpson. Only with a killer voice and fierce acoustic guitar skills, as evidenced on Michelle and Jessica's soon-to-be-releaseded first album as the Wreckers. How did you pick the name? Michelle: We were going to be the Homewreckers. I'm married now, but I have a past of falling in love with guys who had girlfriends or wives. So does Jessica. But we couldn't use the name because it's also the name of a gnarly lonely-housewives porn Web site. How did you two meet? Jessica: We were both girls with guitars and Web sites, and we had mutual fans who were e-mailing us about each other. So we started talking. Michelle: Jessica became my backup singer. Toward the end of my last tour, I would invite her onstage to do our songs and they would get a huge response. I thought, "We need to either get her off the stage or figure this out." Jessica: We jokingly made a pact that if we ever got a record deal we'd have to get boob jobs. That goes to show we never thought it would happen. Do you write a lot on the road? Michelle: It usually happens when Jessica [who lives in Nashville] visits me in California. We'll be strumming guitars and talking about how stupid people are. Like, she was dating my brother a while ago. That was weird-- knowing she was writing this song and knowing it was about my brother. Jessica: And now Michelle has to sing it. Michelle, your husband's a bit older-- Michelle: My husband is twice my age. But Teddy acts as if he's 13 and I act like I'm older than 21. We've been separated for 17 days. It's the longest we've been apart. The other day I was talking to him on the phone and I said, "What are you wearing?" Just joking, but my little sister-- who was in my hotel room-- goes, "Ew, gross."
