She began taking singing lessons at age 8 at Northern Arizona University. She and her family moved to Sedona, Arizona when she was 11 years old. She attended Catholic school. She met her best friend, Jennifer Hagio, while attending Red Rock High School in Sedona. She received her first guitar at age 14. She wrote her first song one week after getting the guitar. She attended Red Rock High School until age 15, when she began homeschooling to focus more on her music. The song "Sweet Misery" was written while Michelle was in Algebra class. Michelle met her manager, Jeff Rabhan, while he was being given a time share tour at a resort by a family friend. Michelle was in a band called Nemesis. Her nickname was "Moshy."
