IBEAD.
I bought this for myself this Xmas [well actually my parents bought for me through my brothers card] and overall I am happy. Firstly, the service over the internet seemed good, and I accidentally ordered something which quickly went through but was easily stopped via one email to customer services, which seem to be a credit to the company. Now onto the product, forgive the length and confusion, but until there's a review here or anywhere on google, this may be the best out there! I have been playing with this for 2 days now, and have some likes, some dislikes. I love the size, and the weight [or lack] and it seems to be of very good quality build. I haven't had a chance to see how long the battery lasts yet, because when I plug it in to transfer files, it charges, so there's no time for it to run flat. The music quality seems of very high standard, as does the microphone, which records a room of people talking very clearly, and I am impressed. 1GB seems enough for music, and it's Flash so no jumping. The FM radio aerial isn't too great it seems, and you need a strong signal to get clear sound. I recorded something from FM today, and all through it there was crackling which became rather annoying. I dont know if it's something I did, or something I didn't but If i find I can get better recordings, I will post again to tell anyone out there. The text viewer is ALMOST pointless as almost every word will get broken up, but it does allow useful notes to be made, but your more likely to want to write it on paper, then you dont need a computer. Perhaps lists is OK though; I have lists of magic the gathering cards on it, which works fairly well, but again - Why? Also there is a limit of 10kb for each txt file, and a maximum of 20 files - OH! I found the alarm function did nothing, and as there is no volume output, then your not going to be using it much I think. But I mean NOTHING - it just went through the alarm time set and ignored it. Ill have to figure this one out. I found that it complained when I put too many tracks into one folder, or at least, it started up telling me there were no files on the player. That was 56 or so [the LOTR music], so now I have them as the separate volumes again. You have no playlist support with this player, and if you just select a track to play, it'll the procede through everything on the player. You need to 'select' a folder to play, and then it'll play everything in that folder. And the extras - The case doesn't make it easy to put the 'hold' button on or off, and the hearphones dont sit very comfortably in my ears, but then I haven't had earphones for the last 10 years, and im only 17, so I probably need my ears to get used to it. The case has a metal part for the belt clip that makes it uncomfortable in the pocket, and im 6 ft high, all im proportion, and the ear phone wires wont let me stand anywhere near straight if the MP3 player is on my belt anyway. But they are useful none the less. The line in wire is too short 'n all !. PS. I like to connnect up the player to my main speakers with the line in cable [phones port to aux in on the speakers] and that makes a nice easy way to listen to radio [seems ok reception in my room]. But it must be said - Excellent battery life, excellent audio quality output, very VERY clear screen, ultimately portable and a bargain price-wise. All in all, Im debating with myself whether I've made the 'right' choice. I also liked the Iriver999, £230 here, and it has AMAZING screen and better battery life, and perhaps better performance in those little nigly bits I mentioned, but then If you dont want to pay more than £120, then this is a star product. Well worth the money, but not the best you can buy. I may firmware upgrade it, to get the OGG support but also incase there are any improvements. I downloaded the fireware before I got the player, but there is no file telling me what this changes, and there is NOTHING to find through google on this player. 8 / 10 [and that's a harsh reading, it's better that I depict, as always] - Alastair, 27th Dec 2004 10:59PM
