Dave’s first question was about how he was doing following his sixth Tour victory. “Life’s been pretty relaxed,” he said. “We’ve been traveling and hanging out with the kids. There’s a lot less stress after #6 vs. #5.” Lance went on to note that after his fifth Tour win he was immediately thinking about a possible sixth. When Dave asked him if he’ll race again at the Tour next year, Lance said, “I haven’t figured that out yet.” He promised he would do another Tour but said he didn’t know yet if it would be this year or not. Lance noted that this year he has let himself relax more than after any other Tour, but noted that he was back on the bike and had ridden in NYC that morning, saying “It’s time to go.” He reaffirmed his desire to race in the Spring Classics and “…prove this old boy can still race bicycles.” Lance also gave props to the Tour de Georgia and said he’d probably do that race again. When Dave asked Lance what it was like to race up solo through the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds ala the Alpe d’Huez Time Trial in the 2004 Tour he admitted it was a bit “frightening” but that it was part of the sport and he felt it was still safe. When Dave asked the inevitable question about doping accusations, Lance said yes, it still comes up – but then joked that it was the off season and the accusers seem to be taking a break… he then gave a very articulate declination of doping, talking about his now-familiar cancer experience and the positive effects of hard work.
