Several vehicles were overturned by the winds. A whirlwind hit Venice on Friday, injuring about 25 people and forcing the cancellation of a festival headlined by American rock band Pearl Jam was to have played, police and fire services said. The whirlwind hit late in the afternoon, bringing down sound towers and girders on the stage for the Heineken Jammin' Festival as well as trees in the surrounding park. Several vehicles were overturned by the strong winds. The damage forced the cancellation of the festival, organiser Roberto De Luca told local media. The park where the concert was to have been held was on the mainland part of the city and there were no reports of damage in the city's historic centre in the lagoon. Venice Mayor Massimo Cacciari said 19 people had been taken to hospitals but only one suffered serious fractures, news agency ANSA reported. This year, Incubus is working with the Sustainable Minded Artists Recording and Touring (SMART) program to lessen their environmental impact by overhauling their touring operations from fuel use to fan t-shirts. The SMART program aims to immediately and dramatically reduce the environmental impact of music industry operations, transform these operations to a status quo of sustainability, and set the music industry standard in greening initiatives. Incubus is working with SMART to: * Reduce CO2 emissions by fueling tour vehicles with biodiesel and reducing vehicle idling at venues * Offset the tour's remaining emissions via carbon dioxide offsets through NativeEnergy * Use sustainable goods and services including organic food, organic cotton merchandise, and 100% recycled paper * Reduce waste by using less disposables and working with venues to increase recycling * Encouraging fans to take action by providing information at shows, selling fan offsets, and facilitating tabling by environmental groups including Heal The Bay, Surfrider Foundation, The Ocean Conservancy, and Environmental Defense Fund Brandon Boyd from Incubus notes, "It's incredibly important to us as a band to preserve the environment when we're on tour. We now have the resources to not only neutralize our carbon footprint, but to help make the environment better each time we're on tour.' 'We couldn't be more excited about Incubus' involvement in SMART, and the many things they're doing on the road and with their Make Yourself Foundation to truly make a difference.
