Speaking to the press, creator Josh Schwartz explains that by the time the show takes its hiatus for baseball, it will become clear that the show is in a “new place.” More specifically, the family unit will emerge as more powerful than ever on the show. “You’re going to see a lot more of [that special family interaction],” Schwartz says. “There will be trips to visit colleges and big college fairs. There will be, of course, prom and graduation. I mean there will be all of those sorts of tent pole kinds of events that will bring everybody together. You’re also just going to see a lot more scenes this year of the Cohens interacting, the kids and the parents all sort of colliding with one another.” But, that doesn’t mean one should wave goodbye to “The OC” he’s grown to know and love. In addition to assuring fans that some punches will be thrown, Schwartz confirms plans for other big events: “I think there are going to be some surprising turn of events. A major character will leave and we may find ourselves at another funeral at some point this year as well.” As the season opens, the characters find last year’s shooting has turned their lives upside down. But, even though the storyline appears to come to a resolution by the episode’s end, Schwartz insists that it’s hardly the end of the problem for the characters, nor is it the last the viewers will see of Trey. “Although there’s sort of the immediate plot and mechanics of the Trey shooting are resolved in that first episode,” Schwartz explains, “The sort of emotional ramifications of it actually play out for a long, long time. The larger Marissa being ostracized from the community, I think the ramifications of the shooting set in motion plot lines that will drive us through most of the season.” Two other storyline promises made by Schwartz include the resolution of the situation with Ryan and Teresa’s baby and trouble for Julie Cooper. “Julie’s in for a bumpy ride, to put it lightly, in these first ten episodes,” he offers. “You can take the girl out of Riverside, but that doesn’t always mean she’s not going to land back in Riverside, if you know what I mean? So Julie’s in for an interesting struggle. Caleb’s will will be read. It will, I think, surprise some people. She’s going to make another go at it with Jimmy Cooper, but…[you know] that Jimmy Cooper.” The media has already hyped the arrival of three guest stars. Jeri Ryan plays a suspicious patient Kirsten meets in rehab (Schwartz unfortunately admits that there are no plans for Jeri Ryan and Kelly Rowan to kiss). Eric Mabius will play “Mean Dean” Hess who, just shortly after joining the Harbor High School administration, actually throws Marissa out of school. And, Autumn Reeser, who’s already won over Schwartz with her acting, portrays Taylor Townsend, an “in-training socialite” who attempts to fill the void left by Marissa as social chair. In the process, she butts heads with Summer. But, those aren’t the only characters joining the show. The third season will be all about new faces in Orange County. “You’re going to meet a bunch of new kids that are going to come into Marissa’s world as she sort of lands in her new schooling environment…There’s going to be a new, young business partner for Sandy Cohen as he’s going to sort of interestingly start to take over the Newport Group and walk that line…There are plans for a bunch of new characters,” Schwartz elaborates. The show’s creator also promises to expand the family of Summer. “We’re also looking to expand Summer’s family,” he confirms. “She’s getting a house, which is very exciting. She doesn’t just have her pink bedroom that everyone shows up in. She’s getting a house. You’re going to see a lot more about her family and her dad and all of that.” As optimistic as Schwartz is about the show, he knows that FOX, at any time, could opt to pull the plug. However, he assures fans that the show’s writing doesn’t involve a strategy that would be affected by a cancellation. The writers strive to provide constant entertainment. “We don’t hold anything back. I mean we go for broke and if we have a good idea for a story line we’re like, “We could save this for season four. No, let’s just use it because you never know and because the dynamics of the show are going to change next year.” We’re optimistic that we’ll be doing this for a couple of more years, but who really knows? We’re certainly not holding anything back this year and we are treating it like it is the end of the show in a sense. It’s the end of the show in a sense, definitely,” Schwartz explains.
