I think you just need to have a good firewall and do an online scan once in a while.. they don't write many mac-specific viruses, so you shouldn't worry too much. it will mainly be cross-platform apps that will be any kind of threat. I personally swtiched to pure open-source system- Suse 10.2 and freeware and it's very much fun I like my system a lot more now

אין שום צורך לסרוק לווירוסים, למרות שיש כמה ווירוסים בודדים שאכן נכתבו למאק. שימותו מקנאי מנורת הניאון.

you're right, but

I learnt to not trust anything "automated" and built in.. That's why I like Linux so much- everything on my machine I put on myself..
