אז ברשותכם אני אעשה cut and paste: Oh my God. Where do I start? It´s the use of Greek mythology, which I´ve always liked, and other mythologies and histories. It´s the way they are used which is sophisticated, with a lot of tongue-in-cheek, which is my favorite kind of humor. It´s the look, that´s different from all other shows, both because of the time in which it´s placed (so you have different sets and costumes from what I´m used to, and they´re very well thought out), and the fact that there are so many scenes shot outside (when you think of it, most TV shows are shot in a studio.), which even changes the colors of the entire show (when I turn on the TV and don´t know what show it is, I need to see one frame to tell you that it´s from HTLJ or XWP or one of the other shows by Ren Pics, just because they have a special look to them). There´s of course the landscape of NZ which are beautiful. It´s the way the visuals are thought out in terms of small details like colors of entire episodes (For example, the colors of many of the past, evil-Xena episodes, is different from the color of most shows. It´s more yellow-orange-brown based than most episodes, where you see a lot of blue skies and green all round). It´s the action, which is more interesting than in most action shows because it´s more physical, more choreographical, more esthetic. It´s the old weapons, which I´m fascinated by. It´s the strategy, especially Xena´s, which is more sophisticated than just wham bam let´s kill them. It´s the wonderful music, that is used very sophisticately (just saw again LEGACY not so long ago, and noticed that while everybody seems to be so happy and relaxed, the musical motif is from MATERNAL INSTINCTS). It´s the superb acting, which shows every nuance of feeling, igniting my imagination, making me want to know more, to know everything, by filling in the gaps by myself. It´s the wonderful scripts and the unusual variety of styles and genres that the show exhibits. I never knew what I was in for when I turned on the TV to watch a XWP episode, and I liked being surprised every time. It´s the relationships, that are very deep, complicated, and everchanging between all the regular characters (Xena, Gabrielle, Ares, Joxer, Aphrodite, Autolycus, Eve, Cyrene). It´s the personal growth and change that we see in all important characters, and the delicate way it´s done. It´s the messages, which are almost never simplistic, even when it is so easy to walk that way. They show the real complexity of being a person, and don´t try to divide the world, like so many do, to black and white, ultimate rights and wrongs. And it´s the fact that finally I see a powerful female figure, who doesn´t stop being powerful around men. Who doesn´t define who she is by her relations to men. Who knows what she likes and knows how to get it. Who likes eating and having sex and isn´t shy about it. Who doesn´t conform to the narrow definitions of what women should be like. She´s the one who made me see there are many different ways of being a woman. And there´s no doubt, she´s 100% woman. And I love the relationship between Gabrielle and Xena, because it shows that female relationships (either you read their relationship as a very close friendship or as romantic love) are important and can endure and are not all about keeping each other company until the first reasonable guy walks by. And I love the ambiguity (it connects to the fact that the show doesn´t make clear-cut definitions of black/white). I find works that are ambiguous more interesting, more challenging. I´m not frustrated by not getting a clear-cut answer - on the contrary, I feel that that the show leaves more room for me and my experiences to fill in the gaps. I feel it actually respects my abilities to do so, and doesn´t try to spoonfeed me. And last but not least, the Xenaverse and the fandom also make me like the show more than I might have liked it otherwise, because I´ve met so many interesting people through it, and I witness every day what kind of an impact the show had on others, and how many different readings of the shows there are, how many different kinds of pleasures it produces. And that´s about it, until I remember more
