Mike Ditka, Pittsburgh Tight End, 1958-1960 Iron Mike, Da Coach, The Hammer. Mike Ditka is known by many names, but he could also be known as one of the greatest tight ends to ever play college football. Ditka was simply bigger, more intense and athletic than any tight end college football had ever seen. He could catch, block, hit and as his legend grew, intimidate. The player: At 6-3 and 225 pounds, he was impossible to stop in the passing game leading the Panthers in receiving for three years with a quickness that also made him an unstoppable defensive lineman. From 1958 to 1960, Ditka made 45 catches for 730 yards and 7 touchdowns. Along with his football skills, he was an outfielder on the baseball team and forward in basketball. If that wasn't enough, he was champion of the intramural wrestling team. The intensity: Few players in college football history liked to hit more than Ditka. He always complained the Pittsburgh practices weren't physical enough and needed more hitting. When teammates weren't playing as intense as he would've liked, he let them know by yelling and occasionally punching them. Much like his coaching and broadcasting days, he never minced his words when it came to coaches and teammates always speaking his mind. The pro career: As the first player selected, and 5th overall, by the Chicago Bears in the 1961 NFL draft, he caught 56 passes for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns to win the NFL's rookie of the year award. He played 84 straight games and was an All-Pro from 1961-1964. He suffered a foot injury which limited him in 1965 and 1966 before later playing for Philadelphia and Dallas in his Hall of Fame career. He was hired as the head coach of the Chicago Bears in 1982 going on to lead them to the 1985 Super Bowl.
