Popular Yugoslav film director Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra staged their first live concert in Bulgaria on Friday at the National Palace of Culture. It was part of the Sofia Music and Film Fest and followed a special screening of Kusturica’s 1998 film Black Cat, White Cat, for which the No Smoking Orchestra wrote and performed the music. “This will be a kind of circus show of anarchist-liberal musicians,” Kusturica had promised at a press conference earlier that day. And so it was. The performers were dressed to produce comic effect. Kusturica wore a red tracksuit top and baggy brown trousers, violinist Dejan Sparavalo wore a smart black jacket and red tracksuit bottoms, the tuba player wore a pyjama-style suit. Vocalist Nenad Jankovic, whose stage name is Dr Nelle Karajlic, was dressed the most showily, however, in shiny black trousers and a tight leopard-print shirt. Think slightly less flash than Austin Powers – but not in behaviour, oh no. “I am Sergio Leone Jr., and this is the No Smoking Orchestra,” Kusturica opened the show. “We play untsa-untsa music.” This turned out to be a compilation of Serbian, Bulgarian, and many other national musical elements, something critics have defined as ‘techno gypsy rock.’ “There are five levels at which you can react to untsa-untsa music,” Kosturisa said, as keyboard player Drazen Jankovic – sporting a tiny, multi-coloured umbrella on his head – demonstrated them. The levels ranged from a simple up-and-down motion of the shoulders through a level displaying the same, basic shoulder rhythm but with hands raised and moving right, left, right, left – “Like in Communist times – very macho,” – to beating your chest with your fists, an upgrade of a lower level called the ‘pitbull reaction.’ After this instruction for the audience, vocalist Dr. Karajlic, who is also the band’s ideologist, took over the hosting of the show. He was inexhaustible as he bounded and leapt and threw himself to the floor – and among the audience. The band brings together 11 master musicians. Violinist Sparavalo, or Maestro Leopold, demonstrated a number of unorthodox ways of playing this instrument, including ‘the sensual way’ – sticking the bow in his belt, and playing by holding the violin at the base and the neck. A virtuoso on the drums Srtibor Kusturitsa and percussionist Zoran Marjanovic got people on their feet. After the hour and a half long show, the band was away in the blink of an eye. But the audience demanded them back on stage and were rewarded with three extra pieces. Young people flooded the space in front of the stage, dancing and singing along; exhibiting reactions which far exceeded level five. Kusturica has played bass guitar in the No Smoking Orchestra on and off since 1985. “Into filmmaking I put everything; it is a martyr’s process. Playing music to me is a catharsis,” he had said earlier. He seemed to be having fun on stage, participating in the acrobatic show, and smoking cigars, in bold disregard for the name of the band. Some of the other musician smoked cigarettes. “The name of the band has nothing to do with health issues,” Kusturica said at the press conference. “It’s about a certain type of human activity, which may be regarded as sexual. “No smoking is more of a political concept than a music band. It emerged as a reaction to Tito’s regime, and is still opposing any kind of authority, and especially any rightist political party.” Comments Comments by natasha smith - 12:16 12 Jul 2007 i think that smoking should not be band because people that smoke will get stressed and they will hurt people more and most people smoke so i dont think it should be band thank-you but i dont smoke no more x x x x x x
