Aliyah - Realities Of It At 46

Hi. My name is Robin Berger. I am 46, single, live in New Jersey and my dream is to make aliyah one day. I have no family living in Israel and no job lined up. I am working as an administrative assistant for an accounting firm. I do have a B.A. in Psychology. Before rushing into anything, I wanted to ask if there are any people my age who were single and had no family in Israel when they made aliyah? Is any help provided in finding jobs and teaching Hebrew to immigrants who are first learning it? Also, does age work against you if you are in your 40's and first trying to find a job? I do need to be prepared with the realities of making the move and about the adjustment and living in Israel. Please tell me your experiences and if any of you had good or bad experiences or had to return to the U.S. because you could not find a job in Israel? Toda raba.

I suggest you make contact with the AACI in Jerusalem (www.aaci.org.il). They know many Olim who have made Aliyah and are here already, starting their lives, some with families some by themselves. Immigration is a major change, learning a new language is not always smooth especially later in life – but, it is possible as long as you give it a chanse. A lot depends on how well you know Hebrew and that and a network of people who are integrated in the job market can help you find a suitable job. Try to come for a visit first, consult a shaliach and find a program that will expose you as much as possible to all of your options here in Israel for you.
