Conversion requirements

Hello all, I have an interesting situation on my hands. I'm getting ready to graduate from college in december and I am considering making Aliyah at that point. I have several issues at hand though. I converted to Judaism several years ago through a conservative temple. I have since learned that the rabbi that taught my classes and led the temple at that time was ordained in a reconstructivist school (As she was unable to be ordained conservative in the 1970s when she entered the profession)At the time of my conversion, I saw nothing auspicious about converting under her, but I wasn't as observant then as I am now. I currently keep kosher and regularly attend services, but don't consider myself to be orthodox and so would feel honest going through an orthodox conversion, although I've heard it's necessary for aliyah. I guess i just want to know what is accepted and what isn't conversionwise and what my options are. Additionally, I have questions about my student loans- 6 months after I graduate I need to begin paying them back unless I enroll in grad school and I'm wondering if there is any sort of deferment plan available in the process of aliyah. Thanks!

no prob

Hi lilniki, for the purpose of aliyah with all rights you are fine but you won't be registered as a Jew, i.e. you currently won't be able to get married in Israel but of course that might not pose a problem for you and things change constantly. Don't know if there are deferrals but I suspect there are good luck! bearsheva

conversion

Yes, many halakhically Jewish Israelis e.g. marry on Cyprus, so no problem. In order to get registered as a Jew, you would have to prove that you underwent an orthodox oonversion that is recognized by the State of Israel. bearsheva
