Because this Question is frequently asked – I have chosen to bring this for you, please read. There are quite a few advantages to making aliyah through the Jewish Agency's offices outside of Israel. To name a few: 1) Jewish Agency representatives will help you clarify your status prior to your arrival in Israel. This means that you will be informed while you are still outside of Israel, in your country of residence, what documents you need to present for making aliyah. In general it is much easier to prepare these documents while still abroad. 2) In most cases, you will be able to receive your status and i.d. number upon arrival in Israel, or (such as cases of returning minors and citizens born abroad) shortly after arrival. This will enable you to proceed almost immediately to sort out all the things you need to do in order to get your life going - opening a bank account, finding employment, signing up for health insurance , etc. People who change status in Israel often have a waiting period for an appointment with the Ministry of Interior and then generally wait at least one month before being granted oleh status and receiving an i.d. number. 3) Your Jewish Agency representative speaks your language!, and can give you most of the information that you need to know about making aliyah. 4) Making aliyah through the Jewish Agency outside of Israel entitles you to receive airfare to Israel, an overweight allowance on the flight, and transportation to your first destination in Israel. As mentioned above, in most cases you will receive your i.d. number and teudat oleh upon arrival to Ben Gurion Airport, which already saves you two steps!
