Fuse -- an Introduction
Miri tells me people are asking 'who is Fuse? Why should we be interested that she is coming to Israel?' Tomoko Fuse (pronounced Foo-SEH) is the most famous modular origami artist in the world. She has written more than 50 books containing more than 650 of her designs. These designs include polyhedra, boxes, flat tessellations and abstract sculptures. Her work is central to any study of modern origami, because it makes links between origami and mathematics, between aesthetics and logic, and between East and West. There is an elegance and 'rightness' to most of her work that is lacking in a lot of other modern work (in my opinion!). Importantly, her art is one which most people can enjoy -- most of her designs are simple or intermediate difficulty. She has travelled 5 times to Europe and the USA with help from the Japan Foundation -- this is more times than any other origami artist. She is also a Board member of the Nippon Origami Association, the most important origami association in Japan. At OrigamiUSA Conventions she is affectionately known as 'Betty', because it is too hard to shout 'Tomoko!' across a crowded room!!
I have had the pleasure to meet her many times, including a memorable stay with her at her amazing studio in the green mountains of Nagano Prefecture. She has a very open, friendly, personality, full of smiles. She is not at all like the cold, impassive Japanese of legend!
Miri has met her 3 times. As you must be aware, it is not easy for us to persuade origami 'stars' to come to Israel. Fuse wants to come because she is very interested in the teaching programmes of the Israeli Origami Center, because she knows she can make a positive contribution to the programme, because she is interested in the Israeli/Palestinian 'folding together' programmes of the Center (she believes strongly -- like we do -- that origami is for everyone) and because we have given her the opportunity to have an important exhibition. This is a UNIQUE opportunity to meet a very important origami artist. If you are not sure if you want to meet her, PLEASE COME! You will be amazed and delighted by the experience, as people have been amazed and delighted by her, many times in many countries. Paul Jackson
