Hydrangea
Hi all, Since many members of this forum like tessellations, I though I might direct you to my new favorite tessellation. This is Fujimoto's Hydrangea. This model is an infinite model. You can continue the folding process ad-infinitum to produce as many levels as you want. I have been able to produce 5 levels out of a piece of 15 cm Kami - with no tools. When I get home (I've been doing this to keep my fingers busy during a long and difficult meeting...), I will try and produce one out of larger paper, to see how many levels I can produce. I cannot offer you diagrams for this, but I can point you to the site where I saw its picture, and several step-photos that helped me to crack the model. I will also provide you a few hints. This is a very satisfying model to fold, with many interesting moves. It is a good test of your folding skills. The CBP it begins with (see hint 2) is a gem and should be attempted by everyone. Hints: (1) This model is iterated - all levels are made out of a single piece of paper. (I thought, at first, it was modular. I asked Ravi, the photographer, and he supplied the information that it really is single-piece). (2) This model begins with Thoki Yenn's Crossed Box Pleat (CBP). Diagrams for the are available in Thoki's booklet - orikata. (BOS 13) - one of my favorite models. (3) In Ravi's page, the last two photos depict steps one must take in order to continue to the third stage. (4) Several points need to be unsunk. (5) There are many ways to perform the (un)sink. I experimented with a few until I found a successful one. I don't know if it's the best way, or Fujimoto's way, but it's relatively easy to do, and gives good results. Good luck!
