53 die in China plane crash BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A China Eastern Airlines commuter jet has crashed into a frozen lake in Inner Mongolia seconds after takeoff Sunday, killing all 53 people aboard. Firefighters and rescue workers were pulling bodies from the lake, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Witnesses said they saw the plane break into flaming fragments, which ignited a house and several yachts. The lake is in Nanhai Park. The cause of the crash was not known. The Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ200, with six crew members, took off from Baotou in the northern Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, about 560 kilometers (350 miles) west of Beijing. It was en route to Shanghai. All on board were confirmed dead by government officials in Baotou. The plane went down about 8:20 a.m. Sunday (12:20 a.m. GMT), about 10 seconds after leaving the airport 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) away.
