Note to Carrie Underwood. Lose Josh Turner. You know, the hyper-talented singer who opened your show last night at Scotiabank Place. He's terrific. So good in fact, that he steals the show. Give full marks to Underwood, the multi-platinum country sensation and American Idol Season 4 winner for giving the fans more than they expected. From the moment she rose centre stage on a hydraulic lift with her long blond tresses and Wal-Mart wardrobe of a black catsuit with rhinestones, Underwood's show was a visual extravaganza. Massive video screens as big as Times Square went into overdrive, causing the 7,700 fans to squeal in approval. The problem is that beneath the elaborate window-dressing, was a singer more ambitious perhaps for a celebrity television career than talented. That's a strange thing to say about the Grammy Award-winning singer who just this week, was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry Hall of Fame. But even being accompanied by a slick eight-piece band couldn't mask Underwood's flaws. Opening with Flat on the Floor, Wasted and Get Out of This Town, it was clear that Underwood doesn't do subtle as she tried to belt each tune out of the rink. And when she pushed her twangy voice beyond its limits, notes bent in strange and often ugly shapes. Later, she posed stiffly in a ball gown while singing Jesus Take the Wheel early in her show. With a setlist that covered every musical genre except opera and fado, Underwood showed off her knack for making everything she sings sound the same. Don't Forget to Remember Me, Crazy Dreams, Twisted, All-American Girl, So Small and her encores, Before He Cheats and Paradise City, were all overblown and out-of-tune. This from a singer who's sold some 11-million albums in two years. Amazing. Opening for Underwood was Josh Turner. Opening is the wrong word. Even though the hot young singer was first up, his 45-minute set of mellow melodies easily stole the show. A whole lot of inspiration, especially on a Good Friday night. Only 30 years old, the former Gospel singer is one of the most convincing arguments for traditional country around. Why? Let's begin with that extraordinary voice, a bass as penetrating and rich as Randy Travis'. Add to that plenty of easy-going, down-home Southern charm, easy manners, Hollywood-worthy good looks and a healthy dose of that old-time religion, there's no doubt that Turner's got to be country's next total package. The kid from Carolina who sang Gospel before rocking the country charts with his debut album, Your Man. With his five-piece band, Turner performed hits from his two albums, the Grammy-nominated Your Man and last year's soul-stirring Everything is Fine, with laid-back but intensely musical takes on Would You Go with Me, Long Black Train and the inspirational Me and God, complete with a unmistakable crucifix lighting up the stage. Not for the spiritually squeamish perhaps, but hey, music and the Lord move in strange ways. In the end, I thought that Turner was a breath of fresh air, an unexpected talented alternative to all the wannabes, overnight sensations and yes, even a few American Idols, clogging up the current music scene. --- CARRIE UNDERWOOD Sun Rating: 2 out of 5 --- JOSH TURNER Scotiabank Place Sun Rating: 5 out of 5
