To date, little research has been done to identify the musical creativity of the concentration camps of Vichy France. Organized by Professor Eliyah Schleifer, authority on Jewish Music and Director of Cantorial Studies at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem, a special concert in commemoration of Yom HasShoah vehaGevurah will feature the works of composer Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson, a survivor of the concentration camps of Saint Cyprien, and Rivesaltes. Entitled Yiddish Gas, the name of the event is taken from the song Abrahamson set to the text of famed Israeli poet Avrohom Sutzkever, a lament on the destruction of the Jewish communities of Europe. The first half of the concert will be devoted to Yiddish and Hebrew art songs composed by Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson prior to the outbreak of WWII; during the period he was on the run from the German occupation of Czechoslovakia; his imprisonment; and after his escape. The second half of the program will feature music by composers active at the Terezin Ghetto Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia. Pianist Alan Sternfeld will perform. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday, Motzeh Yom Hashoah, April 25, 2006, at 8:00 pm, at the campus of the Hebrew Union College, 13 King David Street, Jerusalem. Admission is free. Next year, a concert of the Yiddish and Hebrew art songs of Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson will be performed as part of the Etnachta series of classic music organized by Hayuta Dvir in commemoration of Yom haShoah next year. It will be broadcast live on Kol HaMusica by the Israel Broadcasting Authority from the Henry Crown Symphony Hall in Jerusalem. The concert and broadcast are scheduled for April 16, 2007 at 5:00 pm. Admission is free. Hannah Abrahamson .Art Histsory, ret. Bar-Ilan University [email protected] fax/phone 011 972 3 5340205
