Israel and E.U.

I am considering making aliyah, however, I have heard rumors that Israel may be joining the European Union. Does anyone have information regarding this? I find it a bit frightening to have Brussels "ruling" over Israel. This very well could impact my decision to make aliyah.

I haven't heard anything about Israel joining the EU. If this is in fact true, it might not be such a horrifying thing. Brussels would not be "ruling" over Israel. Think of it in terms of, Israel will have a voice and a place in a largely anti-semitic Union. It's important that we confront issues that are coming out of the EU -- such as blatent anti-israel/anti-semitic sentiment and strong support for the PLO - from a place of equality. Again, I think that this is no more than rumors. Regardless, your decision to make Aliyah should stem from your support of Israel as a Jewish state. If you want to make a difference, add another Jewish body and another Jewish voice to our land. Make your opinions heard, get citizenship so you have voting rights. Take a pro-active stance instead of looking for excuses to take an easier road as an armchair activist. Instead of being frightened, see this as an even stronger reason for you to get over there. No matter what amount of good you can do from wherever you are - you can do it ten-fold from Israel. Don't convince yourself otherwise.
