"machiron' car price list

Hi- We are planning on buying our first car. We plan to buy used. Many ads say the price is listed in the 'machiron'. Where can I find the 'machiron". That's my main questions. But if anyone has any advice for some olim buying their first car here in Israel it would be greatly appreciated. Also do you recommend buying from a dealer or an individual? Chag Samach!

ok........ "Mechrion" - http://tinyurl.com/6olhu (it's on ynet.co.il) it's in Hebrew, and you need to call 057-3333-444 and then it gives you a code so you could enter and see what you're looking for, or you can buy a weekly "subscription". DO NOT buy from a dealer make sure that when you are talking to someone about a car they have and you want to buy from them (used car) that it is their name on the license, and that you're talking to the owner. Take the car to get checked, i wouldn't recommand buying a used car that's done over 100,000km. I also wouldn't recommand getting the car checked at one of the many test places that do that as a business, i don't trust them, and i personally think it's much better going to a mechanic you trust to check the car (who sometimes wouldn't even charge you since you are a customer of their's, and they know better). There are a whole lot cars for sale on the internet, but it's sometimes very outdated, and then best way if possible is to "catch" them on the road, or go for a stroll around the city and try to find something you like. Another option for buying, besides from an individual or a dealer, is to buy cars from the state, in more than one way (cars that they used and now sell) - http://vehicle.mof.gov.il/mof/rechev/ http://www.konesonline.co.il/cars.asp GoodLuck!

car dealers

Thanks, your info was really useful. I do have one more question. Why not buy from a dealer. I figured they at least have a reputation to uphold as opposed to a person who I will never see again. If I do buy from a person I am sorta lost with the whole procedure. I figured a dealer knows the procedure. Thanks for you help so far!!

A dealr knows the procedure well enough to fool you into buying something you shouldn't, they also know how to make a shitty car look like a good car, even after accidents sometimes. Basically it's not a complicated procedure, once you've found a car you want to buy and agree on the price with the seller, you do the following - 1. Write up a simple contract between you two stating the condition of the car and how much money you are paying for it. 2. You go to your bank, and get a BANK CHEQUE - this cheque will have person's name on it (the seller) as the only person who can deposit the money on the amount you agreed upon. 3. The Two of you go into A Post Office Agency and do the procedure of changing ownership on the car (you can show the person the cheque before but Do Not give it to them until you are the registered owner of the car). 4. At the post office they'll ask for the car's papers + both driving licenses/ID's, and they'll make the switch after you sign on a number of papers. 5. After you get your License from the clerk, which is the Car's license with your name on it, you give the seller the cheque (make sure to have the cheque say on it in Hebrew "La'Motav Beelvad" = למוטב בלבד" (which means only they can deposit it as i said before, i think the bank may put that sentence in for you). 6. Once the car is yours you also need to get Insurance for it since people who sell their cars usually cancel the insurance once it was sold. You can do this on the phone, there are many options. ....as i said you should make sure the car is checked before and all the stuff i wrote in the previous messege. i don't know where in israel you're from, but if you're around the center of israel you can email me and i'll give you the name of my mechenic who could check cars before purchse for you (maybe for a fee, i can't say). GoodLUCK

very helpful

Wow, thanks so much for all the advice. We'll take your advice and get it from an individual (not as daunting as it first seemed) I had the idea of the American certified used cars etc... but I am in Israel now. We are students in Beer Sheva so I'll pass on the offer of a good mechanics name. Again, thanks you have been really helpful
