יומנה של מישל מההכנות של האלבום המסחרי הראשון שלה. Week- One Monday January 8th-12th 2001 Wow. It’s the first week of recording my first major label release. I don’t even think I can begin to tell you how excited I am! My dad and I made the trek out from Sedona, Arizona last night, to Los Angeles, California, where the record will be made. We’re going to be staying in an apartment out here for the duration of the recording process. My mom and little sister are going to fly out every other weekend to see us, while my dad and I go home the weekends they won‘t be out here. I’m working with producer John Shanks (BBMak, Stevie Nicks, Chris Isaak, SR-71, Dexter Freebish, Melissa Etheridge, and believe me, many more!) at Henson Studios. It used to be the famous A&M studios, and basically everyone stills calls it that. So far this week we’ve almost finished one song and started another. The first song we recorded is called “U Set Me Free” and John and I co-wrote it the first day we met. It’s a killer song. It’s great to think that it’s the first song we’ve recorded because it makes me feel like the rest will go this smoothly and fabulously. Now all it needs is live drums. The second song we’ve started is a really Beatles influenced song that Jenifer Hagio and I wrote. It’s called “Something To Sleep To”. The title kinda misleads you because it’s definitely more of a rock song, and I don’t know how anyone could sleep to it. I played the keyboards on it, and we laid down a couple tracks of vocals. We also had Patrick Warren come in and play chamberlain on the song. It sounds amazing. There are only a few people who can really play the chamberlain, and Patrick is one of them. It’s a very old instrument that samples string noises. It’s really cool. Another person that is highly involved in the recording process is Lars Fox. He’s the engineer but my favorite fact about him is that he’s in the Everclear “AM Radio” video. He’s the DJ in the beginning and end. (And yes, that hair piece is fake because the real Lars has no hair.) Lars has worked on all the Everclear albums, even co-producing some. He was also the drummer in a really cool band called Grotus. Well everyone, I have to get going to a movie, Finding Forrester. I can’t wait to see how this latest song evolves! Until next week . . . Be well! Week- Two Monday January 15th-19th: 2001 Wow. We got a TON of work done this week. We started the week off by finishing “Something to Sleep to”. I think so far it’s gonna be my favorite track on the album. Sure we’ve barely started, but I just think it really rocks. Then we started a new song of mine called “Everywhere”. It sounds amazing! It’s so fun to see how a song evolves from just being an idea in your head, to a simple acoustic guitar song, then finally to a rock song on an album. Then John played me this track of music he had written, and we decided to put lyrics to it. It’s really sorta 70’s R&B-ish. It’s called “Here With Me”. It’s really cool. Another amazing thing that happened this week was the evolution of an older song of mine. It’s called “Drop In The Ocean” and I first recorded it about two years ago for my first batch of demo tapes. It was a real simple folky type song and it has metamorphosized into something very different. I can’t give away too much about this one because I want everyone to be surprised. I will tell you that we ended up almost rewriting the melody of the song. John stuck me in the vocal booth and said “sing”. My days of singing with a jazz group finally paid off because I improvised the whole song and got the vocal in one take on about our 6th run. After a week of hard work, my dad and I were ready to go back home for the weekend. So I laid down a couple guitar and vocal tracks on “I’d Rather Be In Love” just in time to catch our flight home. Boy I’m tired. Week- Three Monday January 22th-28th: 2001 I’m here at Sunset Sound studios and we’re putting live drums on all the songs. The drummer is amazing! His name is Kenny Aronoff. He’s played with everyone from John Mellencamp, and the Smashing Pumpkins to Ricky Martin. He was playing the drums on “Everywhere” and he broke the bass pedal in half! It’s the first time he’s ever done that. We put new guitar and vocals on “I’d Rather Be In Love” and we also started recording “Goodbye To You”. Patrick came in again and put rhodes, chamberlain and piano on it and everyone in the studio was practically in tears, hehe, it sounds so great. He also put some keyboard stuff in some other various songs. I stopped by Rick Neigher’s studio (He was the producer of my indie record.) and said “hello”. Lucky for me he was working with one of my favorite female artists, Melanie Doane, so I got to meet her. That was nice. Another cool thing that happened was, Jen and I were playing basketball in between drum takes and all of a sudden Robbie Williams came out and joined us. Although I have to admit, he wasn’t very good at basketball. He confessed soccer was his thing. On Friday I met with a great writer named Dave Bassat. Most recently his songs can be found on the Evan and Jaron record. We ended up writing and recording a really cool song called “Collide”. Maybe you’ll hear it at the live shows? I hear Aerosmith is playing at the Super Bowl this weekend. That should be cool! Be well everybody!
