Causes of groin pain other than hernia
Mark, Shalom
Yes, there are other causes of pains in the lower abdomen and groin on the left side that come on suddenly and can last for a few days. One that's not well known, but we often see it in people coming to the Emergency Room, is a twisting of the fat that is attached to the large intestine, the colon. The diagnosis is very well seen on CT. This diagnosis is called "appendigitis" in Israel. A more common cause of left lower abdominal pain is diverticulitis which is an inflammation adjacent to the wall of the colon caused by bacteria breaking their way out of the intestine through a weak spot.
Appendigitis settles down by itself and requires no treatment. Diverticulitis is treated by antibiotics intravenous or by mouth.
Of course, if the surgeon is certain the problem is a hernia, it should be very clear to other surgeons as well.
