War in China

The war in China was devastating. The Nationalist Government had to make use of all the available material, which at best, was not enough.Everyone had to contribute to the struggle, and running such a huge country had to be done by dividing areas into regions and each region having it's own independent administrative government, civil or military. Aid was pumped into regions and corruption was rampart and common.Though the US knew about this, it still preferred to do so, assisting mainly the Nationalists rather than the Communists (who did get some assistance), headed by Mao.Here is an example of a note issued by the administrative military government in a section of Shandong, note for wheat-grain from 1944 for army use.

Assistance

Aid to China was various: be it from supplies, machines, weapons and ammunition and even up to planes and pilots flying in China (The Flying Tigers) and assisting the Chinese air force attack and fight the occupying Japanese. Here is a scan of such a belt buckle found in China, possibly made for the American airmen stationed there.

Pingdu 1943

Here is another example or areas and districts divided during the war. Here is a district in Shandong, district/zone #4, in Pingdu. Many temporary notes appeared during that period of the war due to shortage of currency coming into from the mainland; due to areas in siege, currency was not flowing in, thus many regions had to issue their 'own' currency, like this example from 1943.This can be also referred as 'Siege Money' or 'Emergency Money".
