Adam Lambert is NOT this generation’s Elvis or Michael. With a little less than two months to go before his debut album on November 24th, Adam Lambert has already hit #2 on the Amazon best sellers music charts – based on pre-sales alone. Interestingly enough, we haven’t even heard a snippet of his first single. We’ve heard nothin’ – nada! But it doesn’t matter, because Adam’s fans are ready to propel him to the moon with their support. This once again brought up the question for me; Is Adam the next Elvis, or perhaps the next Michael Jackson? These kinds of icons come few and far between, but every couple of decades we seem to get one. There’re many popular musicians out there that garner a lot of attention, have great music, and great style. And some artists try very hard to get our attention through their crazy fashion sense, or their outspoken personality. When you look at someone like Elvis or Michael, they were each known for their own brand of ground breaking music, dancing, and iconic fashion senses, but you never got the feeling that they were trying too hard. They just were – whatever they were – and it was amazing. This is how I see Adam Lambert. The perfect voice Adam’s voice is so powerful, his range so wide that it seems to be in a continual state of metamorphosis, taking on new shapes with every genre he sings. He seems to have no limits to where his voice can go. Every time I hear Mad World, it’s like the first time I heard Mad World. It never fails to put me in total state of ease, wherever I am. He can get you on your feet shakin’ what your mama gave ya in a sexified version of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, or give you chills down your spine in a haunting slow take on a classic disco song. The funny thing is – these are all cover songs! Imagine how unreal his original music is going to be with the powerhouse producers that he’s been collaborating with in developing his not-yet-titled album. And that explains his position on the music charts in a nutshell. His crazy, sexy, cool style What may have been considered “goth” before Adam came along is now considered rocker chic and he’s making it mainstream. From his blue-black studded leather tour jacket, to his effortlessly stylish street wear of short jackets, long necklaces, and snakeskin cowboy boots – he’s making his own mark on fashion. He’s already hinted to a future makeup line, and I can only imagine what else this creative genius will come up with next. And let’s not even get into the endorsement deals he’ll be pulling in soon. Move over Tiger Woods! Adam, the movie star? It’s no question that Adam is a multitalented guy. He’s got some serious acting chops as witnessed by many for the first time in the VH1’s Best Week Ever brief segment he did immediately following the Idol finale. But he’s had years of theater experience to get him to this point. And I’m betting that within a couple of years Adam will be a triple threat in this business; appearing in films, owning the music charts, and having a P. Diddy-esque fashion empire. Gem of his generation So back to the original question: Is Adam the next Elvis or Michael? Four months ago I would’ve said yes. But I’m realizing that Adam may truly be the gem of this generation, the real idol we’ve all been waiting for. So now I don’t think he’s the next Elvis – he’s the first Adam Lambert. And seriously, isn’t it exciting to be present and aware when an icon is in the making? מכאן
