For '13' rollout, 'cute' sums it up By William Keck, Special for USA TODAY LOS ANGELES — In her new film, 13 Going On 30 (opening April 23), Jennifer Garner plays the suddenly all-grown-up version of an awkward teen longing to be 30. (Think Tom Hanks' Big, just with lots more pink, and way more cute.) There was plenty of both at Wednesday's Westwood premiere, where stars such as Brittany Murphy and Tony Danza walked a dusty-rose-colored carpet leading to a 13-year-old girl's teddy bear-filled bedroom. Ruffalo on Garner's cheeriness: "She'd sing some perversion of my name: 'Mark-us Ruffal-is, will you have some lunch with-us?" By Carlo Allegri, Getty Images "I've never been to so cute a premiere," the film's Mark Ruffalo marveled as he watched five girls in Care Bears pajamas hopping on a bed and handing out lollipops. "Usually the films I do, they don't even allow kids in." The "cute" factor was equally astronomical on the film's set, where Ruffalo was greeted each morning with a musical ditty from Garner. "Usually," Ruffalo said, "she'd sing some perversion of my name: 'Mark-us Ruffal-is, will you have some lunch with-us? ... It would be very tas-ty, with Mark-A-Ruffal-ty ...' " Yikes! Believe it or not, kid-at-heart Garner will be celebrating her 32nd birthday this Saturday — in a synagogue. "I'm going to my first bat mitzvah," beamed Garner, dressed in a full-length lily-white Douglas Hannant gown she chose to honor the "young and innocent" theme of her film. "My friend Maddy, who has been my friend since she was 6 (and cameos in the film), is doing her bat mitzvah on my birthday, so that's where I'll be." But Garner will be singing solo at the bat mitzvah, without boyfriend (and Alias co-star) Michael Vartan. The two were all lovey-dovey at the premiere, but in two weeks, Garner will head north to Vancouver to join just-cast Terence Stamp in her Daredevil spinoff, Elektra, while Vartan will be spending his hiatus with another Jennifer — as in, Lopez, playing her beau (and JaneFonda's son) in the comedy Monster-In-Law. J. Lo personally gave Vartan her seal of approval. "She had just gotten off a plane from Miami and rushed from the L.A. airport to meet me," said Vartan, looking as dapper as Ben Affleck in a black pinstriped Gucci suit. "It was one of those situations where the director said I'd get the job (as long as) I didn't vomit on her shoes, because I was so nervous. But she made me feel so comfortable." Lopez approved and Vartan was cast that same night. As for Alias, Vartan hints that his character's life will be left hanging in the show's May season finale, which shoots next week. "I don't know if I'm coming back for the fourth season. I don't know if my character will make it." But that just got Garner's eyes rolling. "Oh puh-leeze," she said. "What drama."
