"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." I been sayin' that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker 'fore you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin' made me think twice. Now I'm thinkin', it could mean you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. .45 here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or is could by you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin'. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd. http://www.godamongdirectors.com/scripts/pulp.shtml

This quote defines the movie. The non-linear, timeless, plot structure lets the film begin and end with scenes where the quote is recited, and in the center of the film's events Quentin Tarantino, the director, gives us the quote once more. If the movie is reconstructed along a conventional timeline, the scenes involving the Bible passage would occur before the film's midway point. The fact that the film's structure is dependent upon the quote to act as a kind of spine forces the significance of this quote to be recognized. Re-read the diner scene which concludes the film: Samuel Jackson's character explains to the Tim Roth character what he thinks the Bible passage means. Pumpkin, played by Roth, had been holding up the diner until Jules took his gun away from him. Jules has the gun pointed at Pumpkin as he explains what he thinks the passage means. He offers three interpretations: 1--Pumpkin is the evil man, Jules is the righteous man, and "Mr. nine-millimeter here is the shepherd protecting [Jules'] ass in the valley of darkness." 2--Pumpkin is the righteous man, Jules is the shepherd, and the world is the one which is selfish and evil. 3--Pumpkin as the weak and Jules as the tyranny of evil men. The third interpretation is the one which Jules takes as true, but it is clear that all three interpretations are valid. Jules claims that he is trying to be the shepherd, but there is only one certainty that can be taken out of this initial scene -- modern society is signified as the "valley of darkness." Within this darkness one chooses to exist as the righteous man, `the selfish man, the evil man, or the shepherd.
