Danny Jones Interview MCFLY are touring with a greatest hits album despite the fact that the combined age of the four of them is just 84. Tom Fletcher, 22, Danny Jones, 21, Dougie Poynter, 20, and Harry Judd, 21, are only three albums old but they are already pop veterans. We asked guitarist Danny a few hit-related questions.
What has been your favourite McFly hit to date? “I like I Wanna Hold You, it’s just a really good song.”
Who in McFly is the greatest hit with the ladies? “I’d probably have to say Dougie. He wins awards for that sort of thing. But from men’s magazines too. He’s a gay icon.”
Who in the world would you most like to hit? “Frank Bruno. Not because I don’t like him but because it would be great to be able to hit someone as hard as you can and know that he could take it. He probably wouldn’t even blink. He can’t hit me back though. It would probably kill me.”
Which is your favourite hit to play live? “Room On The Third Floor because it’s got a really big rock chorus.”
Who is the worst celebrity that has hit on you since you have become famous? “There was some guy from the programme Shipwrecked that was really flirting with me in a club in London and wouldn’t leave me alone. My mate said to me ‘he fancies you’ and I said ‘You must be joking. No chance!’ I have no idea who he was but he had a big afro.”
Who’s got the hardest hit/punch in the band? “Me. If it came down to it, if there was a massive McFly pile-on, I’d knock ’em all out.”
You performed with Charlotte Church on her TV show. How did you decide whose hit to perform. “Instead of doing one of her hits or one of ours we did a cover of Primal Scream’s single Rocks. It was weird to hear a girl’s voice on it but she did it really well.”
If you could support any hit band in the world .... “It would have to be the Foo Fighters. Can you imagine that? Foo Fighters fans turning up at a gig and hearing ‘and now for the support act, McFly’ – that would be brilliant. I won’t hold my breath waiting for the call from Dave Grohl though. Although Tom spoke to Bryan Adams this morning ... maybe he’s looking for a support band.”
Which hit do you like least? “None. All our songs are great.”
Which of the cover version hits you have recorded has been your favourite? “I like the one we are playing at the minute, Umbrella, which was a B-side on our last single. It’s that Rihanna song and I know it’s annoying but we do it in a very different way. We rock it up and do it double time. It’s good fun.”
Will McFly hit 21 as a band or will you all have retired to Jamaica by then? “We want to do both. We’ll be playing and recording but we’ll be living in Jamaica to do it. The best is yet to come. We already have another album on the way for next summer.”
