what do you mean by
not excatly that...? ofcourse it isn't, because it has to be written in Katakana - but it is as close as it gets and just like a Japanese will write/ pronounce it....
Katakana
the Japanese ppl can't pronouce consonants ("Izurim"), only vowels, therefore they will change every consonant into a vowel. ie - Rotem - Ro-te-mu Yotam - Yo-ta-mo Amit - A-mi-to Tamar - Ta-ma-ru check out the phonetic Alphabet (Hiragana and Kataka, sometimes refer to as 'Kana' only..) and you will notice that there are no consonants there, as the Katakana was made up especially for writing words of foreign origins one must 'force' the limited (for luck of a better word) phonetics sounds of the Katakana upon the original sound of the word.... kind of hard to describe in writing, but take another look at the names above... another example might help here too Video - will be written Bi-de-o as there is no V the name Lara (as in Ms. Croft) will be written Ra-ra... fork - fo-ku knife - Nai-fu fight - fai-to hope that helped and not only added to the confusion.....

לפי הסדר שהפילוסוף שאל:

in the Japanese language there are about 48-50 different sounds those are all the sounds that appears in the Kana (Hiragana and Katakana) あ、い、う、え、お か、き、く、け、こ さ、し、す、せ、そ and so on... a Japanese highschool student is expected to know roughly 2,000 different Kanji and that is what commonly estimated as the number of Kanji needed to read the newspaper... (it used to be more by the way, this number is coming down all the time as the Japanese ppl know less and less Kanji, for reference - it used to be around 2,500 about 10 years ago...) now it's Math time: 2000 different Kanji 50 different sounds only --------------------------- 1 sound can be represented in about 40 different ways.... (2000/50=40) of course the situation actually isn't that bad, (even though the numbers are correct) but it can start and give you and idea why so many different Japanese words sounds the same [btw - this is not unique to Japanese, how many meaning does the word 'track' has in english...? about 7-8...)

the most famous story regarding that is about a research trasnlation program, it might have even been a collAboration between an American and an Soviet (it was in the 70') universities... they wrote a pretty amazing program (in those days terms) and when they finally finished they entered the phrase "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" to be translates from English to Russsian - that worked pretty good. when they tried to cross-translate it though (from Russian to English) they got some think like "the Vodka was good the meat was rotten....." an attempt like this was tried again (sometime last year i think) and even though they used much better machines and algorithms the result was some what the same.... i had a link to it somewhere but i can't seem to find it now, if it of any interest i believe the almighty google might be of help here.....

correct but...
first, the correct way to say it is "watashi wa nihongo ga wakarimasen". "masu" is the basic form, "masen" is negative and "ka" indicates a question(among other things but let's not get into it now). but...."masu" is not the real basic form, it is a more polite form and you will not find it in the dictionary. in the dictionary you will find the "plain form". for example, "wakarimasu" will "wakaru". to eat-tabemasu-taberu to drink-nomimasu-nomu the plain form for "masen" is "nai". wakarimasen-wakaranai tabemasen-tabenai nomimasen-nomanai the plain form is usually used between friends and family. anyway, i know it`s just the tip of the iceberg but i hope it helped.
