things to buy for homebirth
I don't think that 2 towells are enough. It all depends on how much water you have and how much you bleed, and you never know. Some births I've only used 4 of the sdiniot and some I needed 7. If you don't want to buy a package of 15 sdiniot, which is really too much, you must prepare at least 6 fat and thick towells and several big meter sqare plastic for under them. I now offer a complete birth kit to my homebirth clients to save them money and time, and also to prevent the problem that happened a few times to me that I came to the birth and the people hadn't yet bought the necessary supplies for various reasons (no time, denying the reality, birthing at 37 weeks, no car). I buy big quantities at wholesale prices and divide it up into small boxes of supplies. I put it the sdiniot (underpads), large pads for the bleeding in the first 24 hours, box of net underwear, instant ice pack for perineum, dermasoft wipes for sore perineum, lacerations, or stitches (rare) or hemorrhoids (not uncommon), 5 baby diapers to start off with, baby hat, baby wipes, almond oil, Saves money and shopping time and getting the wrong thing. Some times I come to birth and see that women have spent at least 300 NIS an all these supplies, because they bought expensive oil or a whole package of 15 shikma pads or the shikma anatomical inserts instead of the regular shikma pads. I don't think that the physio ball is a big necessity at all. I have one in my zimmer and I don't see the women using it so much, or the ones that do don't find it so great. If a woman wants I can bring it to her homebirth. You can save money with the titulim instead of pads, but some women find them too bulky. I do suggest that you organize the baby clothes in advance, and not leave it to your man to choose, because they have a hard time with this. Sometimes when I'm ready to dress the baby, the couple tells me that someplace in the attic there is a box of clothes and he goes and brings me a box with clothes from newborn to age 3 all together, and I have to sort this through. Please, have mercy on your tired midwife and arrange this before. Undershirt, and one-piece outfit, or 2 undershirs and pants, all smallest size newborn. Consider the season if you need flannel or not. Baby hat and blanket also.
